"it'll never happen to me!" is an easy mental trap to fall into. Here are some tangible things you can do to prevent potential "life" problems:

- Social Security number. Store the card in a safe, private place, and do not write it on checks or other documents.
- Credit information. Request a copy of your credit reporting annually from each of the three major reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). Never give out your credit information over the phone unless you initiate the call, and always shred old documents (including credit card offers).
- Wallet or purse contents. make copies of your driver's license and credit cards in case they are stolen.
- Computer software secureity. Always use virus protection software and be very careful about entering personal information on websites.

- Emergencies. Keep supplies in your home and car so that you can deal with natural and man-made disasters.
